canary in the data mine (documentary short)
Inspired by the massive, predatory, and extremely profitable economy of extracted personal data that sustains platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, a small-time data-miner named Tony Sparrow heads to YouTube Live. Here, Tony uncovers a gold mine of vulnerable streamers ready to part with their personal information in exchange for the illusion of an audience. As Tony "mines" deeper and deeper, and his victims naively part with passwords and their mothers’ maiden names, an unsettling portrait of our modern economy begins to take shape, forcing the film’s tone to shift from bleak humor to horror.
